Planting food - 20th April 2018

We started thinking about where food comes from. We know that some food products are types of plants. We went into the prayer garden to plant. We have planted salad leaves, carrots and potatoes. We will continue to water them over the upcoming weeks and hope they grow! Once they have grown we will be able to taste them.

The Gingerbread Man - 17th April 2018

To launch our new topic about food we will made gingerbread men. We weighed out the ingredients, followed the recipe and then baked them. Once we had finished we took them home to eat. We will be using 'The Gingerbread Man' as our English text and making our own version. Luckily, the gingerbread we baked didn't run away!

Ice Rescue! - 31st January 2018

Last week we explored the different materials in our classroom and the properties they had and enjoyed watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOKr462HLc0 We then moved on to exploring the properties of ice to link to our Polar Explorers topic.

Today disaster struck! Elsa had been playing with the other characters from the Frozen film, when she accidently froze them into blocks of ice. She asked us to help her melt the ice and free her friends. The children had to work out what the best way was to freeze them and create their own investigation. They recorded their observations on the iPads: they took pictures and videos.

Take a look at the different topic activities we have been doing for our polar explorers topic. The children have used non-fiction books to find out lots of information, made transport suitable for the polar climates, role played being different animals, used maps to locate the different continents and many more creative ideas.

Power down Pete's visit - 13th December 2017

Power down Pete came to talk about to us about composting. We watched a video about how worms help to break down the waste in a compost bin. We then got to make our own wormery (have a look at the pictures below.) First we put in some compost, then some shredded paper and finally some lettuce. We then punched holes into the top so they could get some air. The children then put them into a paper bag as they don't like the sunlight.

Maths week - 27th November - 1st December

Come and have a look at all the things we did for maths week.

  • We visited the library and the told us a maths story, we then helped them to make some snowflakes and looked at the different shapes we had cut out.
  • We looked at maths within our environment and thought of all the different ways we could apply maths.
  • We had a visit from the bank and they told us about how much money they have in the bank and what they do in their job.
  • We visited Sainsbury's. We all took £1 with us and we looked at what we could buy with our money. We then paid for our item and had a look at the change we had.

Baking

In maths this week we have been learning about weight and mass. To apply our new skills we baked some biscuits. Reception had to look at a recipe and maths the numbers on a digital scale to what was on the recipe. We looked at which ingredient we had the most of.

Year One used a scale and had to read it to see that we had the correct amount of each ingredient. We had to work as a team. When one person poured the ingredients, the others had to read the scale and say when to stop.

Teddy bears' picnic

To launch our topic on toys, St Francis' class enjoy a teddy bears' picnic. In Maths, we used our teddy bears to compare size. We found out who had the tallest and who had the shortest teddy bear. In English we used our teddy bears in our writing, with Reception drawing and labelling a picture and Year One describing their teddy. We also made teddy bear toast to enjoy at our picnic.

Meet our Reception children

On Friday 29th September we held a Harvest Festival Collective worship. As part of this assembly, St Francis' class shared the story of the Little Red Hen and his journey from harvesting the corn to eating the bread.

The topic for Autumn 1 is 'Knock, Knock!'.
