Helping others to access books

Sam and Kate have been very busy at home and have worked with Champion House, a home for adults with disabilities in Leeds.  A resident at the home has written and illustrated book called The Cherry Bun Tree especially for children. It's being made available in different formats to be accessible and enjoyed by lots of people. Sam and Kate worked on an audio version to accompany the book in British Sign Language. Well done, what a lovely thing to do by helping everyone to access books!

USA Road Trip

Welcome back to the second half of the Spring term. There is a Topic Web included with this letter, which will help you to support your child with their learning. In our topic for this half-term we will be taking a whistle stop tour of the USA, its geography, history and cuisine. Our learning is centred on the USA’s physical and human geography, locating the USA States and its cities on a map and comparing it to Great Britain.

Our learning question is What happened in the Wild West? We will be learning about how pioneers crossed the Western frontier; the Native Americans’ way of life and the impact of European settlement on Native American land, the lives of Homesteaders and cowboys in the Wild West.

In science, will be learning how to identify, organise and group animals based on different classifications and discover how the animals and plants are linked through food chains back in the times of the Wild West in America. Also, we will be constructing a simple series electrical circuits, identifying and naming its basic parts: including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers and learning about common conductors and insulators. In PE we will be developing our flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance in gymnastics.

Thank you for your ongoing support and if you would like to come in to school to hear readers, share your skills or run an art/craft activity, please let us know. We look forward to a fun and successful half-term!

Kind regards,

Miss Pitchers

We will be learning about where the rainforests are in the world and locating them on a world map. We will be exploring what it is like in a rainforest and learn about the four main layers of vegetation. We will be exploring the word ‘climate’ and investigate the climate of tropical rainforests. We will be learning about the indigenous rainforest tribes and compare their lives with life in modern society and discover how the rainforests are under threat and the actions that we can take to help save them.

In science, will be learning about different parts of a plant and their purpose and we will be identifying and describing the different types of plants and animals found in the rainforest. Reading in Class 2 - Reading Expectations and Reading Records

It is expected that your child reads every night for 15 minutes. It is very beneficial to your child to read to an adult regularly, so please encourage your child to read at home every day and if they do not change their reading book, please come in and tell us. Please write in their reading records to tell us what they have read and any difficulties encountered. We check their Reading Records every day to see how they are getting on with their reading and will award house points for reading at home. Your child must continue read our school colour-banded books but it is also recommended that they read a variety of books from different authors, poetry, nonfiction and comics in addition to provide them with a rich reading experience, which can be written in their reading records.

We all had an excellent time at the Skylark Nature Reserve. We did orienteering in teams, made dens, identified animals by their footprints, learnt about bird calls and toasted marshmallows on the fire!
